A beautifully chosen pair of tights can refine an entire look, whether you are dressing for the office, a winter wedding or an evening out. Knowing how to wash delicate hosiery is what helps that silky finish, comfortable fit and even colour last beyond the first few wears. A little care takes only minutes, yet it can make a noticeable difference to premium sheers, lace-top hold-ups and fine patterned styles.
Hosiery is made to move with the body, but its fine yarns are vulnerable to friction, heat and snagging. Treat it as a small wardrobe luxury rather than an ordinary load of laundry, and it will retain its elegance for far longer.
Why delicate hosiery needs different care
Fine tights and stockings are often knitted from polyamide, elastane or a blend of technical fibres designed for softness, stretch and a close fit. Sheer styles use exceptionally fine yarns, while shaping, maternity and compression designs rely on carefully constructed stretch panels to perform as intended.
A standard wash can be hard on these fibres. Rough fabrics such as denim, towels and knitwear create abrasion; hot water can weaken elastane; and a tumble dryer may leave hosiery misshapen, overly tight or prone to laddering. Even a zip, bra hook or ring caught in the drum can end the life of a favourite pair.
Opaque tights have a little more resilience than 10 or 15 denier sheers, but they still benefit from gentle treatment. Fishnets, patterned tights and lace hold-ups need particular attention because their open or decorative construction can catch easily. The rule is simple: the finer, more detailed or more supportive the hosiery, the gentler the wash should be.
How to wash delicate hosiery by hand
Hand washing is the most reliable choice for premium hosiery. It protects the fibres from unnecessary stretching and gives you control over every stage, especially when caring for sheer tights, stockings and hold-ups.
Start by checking the care label. It will confirm the recommended temperature and whether the item has any specialist requirements. In most cases, use a clean basin or sink filled with cool to lukewarm water. Water that feels comfortably cool to your hand is ideal. Very hot water is never a good match for elastic fibres.
Add a small amount of mild detergent made for delicates. Avoid heavy-duty powders, bleach, fabric softener and products with strong stain-removing agents. These can dull the finish of sheer hosiery, affect colour and gradually reduce elasticity. Swish the water lightly to disperse the detergent before adding the tights or stockings.
Turn hosiery inside out if it has a printed pattern, decorative finish or a reinforced toe you would like to protect. Place it in the water and gently press it beneath the surface. Let it soak for around five to ten minutes, then move it through the water with light squeezing motions. Do not scrub, twist or rub the fabric against itself. A mark around the foot or heel can be treated by gently working a tiny amount of detergent through the area with your fingertips.
Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with cool clean water. Rinse until the water runs clear and there is no detergent left in the fibres. Residue can make hosiery feel less soft and may irritate sensitive skin, particularly with close-fitting support or shaping styles.
Machine washing: when it can work
Machine washing is a practical option for more durable everyday opaques, girls' tights, leggings and some socks, provided the care label permits it. It is also useful when you have several similar items to wash, but the preparation matters as much as the programme.
Place each pair in a fine mesh laundry bag. This creates a barrier between the hosiery and the washing machine drum, while also preventing one item from tangling around another. If you do not have a laundry bag, hand washing is the safer alternative for fine deniers and hold-ups.
Wash with similarly lightweight, smooth garments only. A load containing soft jersey tops or delicate underwear is preferable to one containing towels, jeans, jumpers or anything with exposed hardware. Choose a delicate or hand-wash cycle, a low spin and a cool temperature, ideally 30°C or lower unless the label says otherwise.
Use a small dose of liquid detergent for delicates. Liquid detergent tends to dissolve more readily in cooler water than powder, reducing the chance of residue on fine yarns. Skip fabric conditioner, even if you enjoy a softer feel in other garments. It can coat performance fibres and interfere with the grip of silicone bands on hold-ups.
There is a trade-off here. A delicate machine cycle is convenient and can be perfectly suitable for sturdier styles, but hand washing remains the best choice when the hosiery is exceptionally sheer, expensive, embellished or reserved for special occasions.
Drying tights, stockings and hold-ups properly
The way you dry hosiery has as much influence on its lifespan as the wash itself. Once rinsed, never wring it out. Twisting stretches fine yarns and can distort the waistband, gusset or shaped leg. Instead, gather the item gently in your hands and press out excess water.
For a more effective method, lay the hosiery flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel up loosely with the tights inside, then press along the roll to transfer moisture into the towel. Unroll and reshape the hosiery before drying it flat on a fresh towel or a drying rack with a smooth surface.
Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators and heated airers. Strong heat can degrade elastane and cause deep colours, especially black, navy and fashion shades, to fade over time. A well-ventilated room is enough. Avoid hanging tights by the waistband or toes when wet, as the weight of the water can pull the fabric out of shape.
The tumble dryer is best avoided entirely. Even on a low setting, its heat and friction are simply too harsh for delicate hosiery.
Care by hosiery type
Not every pair needs identical handling. Consider its fabric, finish and function before deciding on a wash routine.
Sheer tights from 5 to 20 denier should usually be hand washed after one or two wears, depending on the weather and occasion. Their fine construction benefits from minimal handling, and washing them separately helps prevent accidental snags.
Opaque tights can often be worn several times before washing if they remain fresh and are worn over clean underwear. Hand wash for the longest life, or use a mesh bag and delicate cycle for practical weekday care. Turning them inside out can help preserve a smooth outer finish.
Hold-ups require a little extra attention around the silicone bands. Keep moisturiser, body oil and fabric conditioner away from the grip area, as these can reduce its hold. Hand wash in cool water, rinse thoroughly and dry flat. Do not stretch the bands while wet.
Compression and shaping tights should always follow their specific label instructions. Their firm, supportive feel comes from engineered elasticity, so harsh detergents, high heat and excessive spinning can affect fit and performance. If you rely on them for work, travel or pregnancy comfort, owning two pairs allows each one to rest between wears.
Fishnets, lace and patterned designs are best hand washed. Their visual impact comes from delicate construction, and a single caught thread can alter the look. Wash these items in a basin rather than risking a washing machine, even inside a bag.
Small habits that prevent damage before washing
The easiest way to preserve hosiery is to reduce friction from the moment you put it on. Smooth rough skin around heels and nails, remove jewellery that could catch, and avoid pulling from the waistband with force. Gather each leg down to the toe, slip it over the foot, then ease the fabric up gradually. This gives a more even fit and puts less strain on the yarn.
After wearing, do not leave tights bundled in a handbag or mixed with shoes, keys and metal fastenings. Let them air briefly, then store them folded or loosely rolled in a dedicated drawer, pouch or organiser. Keeping pairs separate from bras with hooks, belts and textured accessories is a simple way to avoid unexpected snags.
If a tiny pull appears, stop it becoming worse by handling the area as little as possible. A clear hosiery repair product can help secure a small ladder in an emergency, but it is not a permanent fix. For occasionwear, it is always wise to keep a spare pair in your bag.
